The operator, the sole occupant, of a small airplane died when it crashed into a wooded area of St. Mary’s County on Saturday morning, officials said.

Around 9:04 a.m., 911 calls poured in regarding a possible airplane crash near Dorsey Park in Hollywood, according to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police.

First responders searched and found a small Ultralight aircraft around 10:21 a.m. in the woods of Hollywood, officials said. It was not immediately clear how it crashed, state police said in a statement. Officials were notifying family members before releasing the names of the deceased person.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement the plane was a Sonex aircraft.

Maryland State Police, the Maryland Aviation Administration, FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

Hollywood is a small suburban town along the Patuxent River, about four miles north of the St. Mary’s Regional Airport.
