A Bethesda man fatally shot a Baltimore County man and then himself in a murder-suicide Thursday in Washington, police said.

The incident in the Friendship Heights neighborhood occurred at about 1 a.m. in the 5200 block of 44th Street, Northwest, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department.

The suspect arrived at the location, shot the victim and then shot himself, according to police. A firearm was recovered, police said, calling the incident β€œdomestic related.”

Fire and emergency medical service personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but the men were pronounced dead on the scene.

Police identified the suspect as 44-year-old Terrell Cross of Bethesda and the victim as 42-year-old Robert Stokes of Middle River.

Randy Clarke, general manager of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, without identifying the men who died, said Thursday during a meeting that they were WMATA employees.

β€œWe tragically lost two members of the WMATA team,” he said. β€œOur staff is the soul of this organization.”
