After searching for about 20 hours, the U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search Friday for a boater who went missing off the coast of Ocean City.

The boater, who has been identified as 49-year-old Daniel Potter, is believed to have gone overboard from his vessel, the Coast Guard said in a news release Saturday.

The search for Potter covered over 2,500 square nautical miles, which is roughly the size of the neighboring Delaware River.

Earlier in the week, the Worcester County Sheriff’s office declared the Ocean Pines resident critically missing and requested the public’s assistance in the search.

The mariner’s vessel was towed to shore Friday night. Potter’s friends and family picked up the boat Saturday afternoon, officials said.

Potter is still unaccounted for, according to the sheriff’s office. An official with the U.S. Coast Guard said he did not have additional information.

The Ocean City Police Department did not immediately return a request for comment.
