Four people were injured after a machine at McCormick & Co.’s Hunt Valley spice plant malfunctioned, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department.

Fire officials were called to the scene around 1:35 p.m. Monday. One person was seriously injured and had to be flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, according to fire department personnel. Three others face non-life-threatening injuries during the incident in the 11100 block of McCormick Road, fire officials shared in a post on social media.

Travis Francis, a spokesperson for the Baltimore County Fire Department, said all of those injured were employed by the spice company.

McCormick is aware of the incident and all employees were evacuated from the Hunt Valley facility, said Michele Vee, a company spokesperson.

Fire officials said there is currently no threat to the community. Vee said the company was clear to resume operations at the site at 6 p.m. Monday.

“The health and safety of our employees is our #1 priority,” Vee said. ”We will continue to evaluate the site for any additional precautions.”

McCormick & Company, Inc started in 1899 with founder Willoughby M. McCormick and three other workers selling spices and extracts door-to-door, according to the business’s website. Nearly 140 years later, the business employs over 14,000 people; reported about $7 billion in annual sales last year; and has added other brands, such as Frank’s Red Hot, Old Bay and Zatarain’s, into its portfolio, all while remaining in the Baltimore region.

Monday’s incident comes a week after McCormick acquired much of Unilever’s food business. Unilever is a British consumer packaged goods conglomerate that produces brands such as Hellmann’s mayonnaise.
