Two Maryland State Police troopers are being celebrated after sprinting into action to save a choking baby boy’s life in Calvert County over the weekend.

State officials said Trooper 1st Class Taylor Hersh and Cpl. Jonathan Stoltzfus were in the middle of responding to a different call in a Lusby neighborhood on Saturday when they shifted gears to answer a grandmother’s cries.

“Help! My baby is choking,” the woman screamed from the front yard of a nearby home.

Hersh heard her cries and bolted across the street. Stoltzfus, too, ran toward the screaming woman.

“He’s not breathing. It’s like he’s choking on something,” the woman, who officials say is the baby boy’s grandmother, said as she handed the infant to Hersh. “He’s throwing up. He’s just spitting up some stuff.”

The state trooper knelt down and placed the baby over his knee. The grandmother stood nearby in her pajama pants while the trooper patted her grandson’s back.

“Come on, buddy, come on,” Hersh said. “You breathing?”

The baby was stiff and immobile, despite the state trooper’s efforts. Hersh handed him to Stoltzfus while he went to fetch materials to better render aid.

“Are you breathing, bud? Come here, come here,” Stoltzfus said.

Checking the boy’s pulse, the trooper said, “Yeah, he’s breathing.” The grandmother sighed in relief.

State police officials suggested the quick response to clear the infant’s airways, which took under a minute, prevented a tragic ending. The video has gotten over 6,800 likes and has been shared nearly 500 times on Maryland State Police’s official Facebook account.
