A car that included seven children collided in Germantown Tuesday with another vehicle whose driver died in the crash, Montgomery County Police said Tuesday.
The seven children, who were taken to area hospitals, had been in a Kia Optima that was reported stolen hours after the crash, police said. The group ranged in age from 12 to 15.
The man driving the other car, a Toyota Matrix, was pronounced dead at the scene, near Great Seneca Highway and Clopper Road.
His identity was not immediately released on Tuesday.
A preliminary investigation determined that the Optima, which had been reported stolen from a Montgomery County residence, entered an intersection and struck the Matrix on Clopper Road.
The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation, police said.
The child driving the Kia was in critical but stable condition and another occupant of the car was in critical condition, according to the county Fire Department. The others sustained injuries of varying severity and were transported to several area trauma centers.
More information is expected to be released later, police said.
Dozens of first responders arrived at the scene, said Pete Piringer, spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.
