A 42-year-old man died when a pickup truck struck the lawn mower he was driving in Caroline County Wednesday afternoon, Maryland State Police said.

Joel Garcia was riding along Burrsville Road in Denton on a John Deere lawn mower when a 32-year-old Toyota pickup truck driver left the road and hit him, state police said.

Police were called to the area just before 3:30 p.m.

State police said Garcia died on the scene, while the pickup truck driver was transported to a hospital for injuries.

The crash led to over six hours of lane closures, police said.

According to census data, Denton is a town of around 4,900 people across 5.3 square miles. Burrsville Road runs among farmland.

There have been two crash fatalities in Caroline County so far this year compared to four last year, state data shows.
