Seven Howard High School junior varsity football players face second-degree assault charges following an incident Friday afternoon. School officials also suspended the program.

“This message is to inform you that effective immediately, the Howard High School JV Football program is suspended, pending an investigation of a recent situation involving some team members,” Principal Allen Cosentino wrote in a Monday email to families.

According to police, seven junior varsity football players aged 14 to 16 were charged with second-degree assault via juvenile referral. The charges are “a result of the incident on Sept. 25 that was reported to police,” Howard County Police spokesperson Seth Hoffman said in a statement.

Details of the incident were not disclosed by police or the school. The investigation is ongoing.

Cosentino said that because the incident involves students under 18 and is under investigation, details are limited.

Howard High’s JV football team has a 1-3 record, having lost its last three games to Reservoir, Marriotts Ridge and Hammond high schools. The team is slated to play Long Reach High School on Oct. 5.
