A woman was killed in a shooting early Sunday morning in an Essex waterfront community, police said.

Baltimore County Police were called to the 800 block of Woodrow Avenue just before 2 a.m. Sunday. A woman who has not been identified was pronounced dead at the scene, Trae Corbin, a spokesperson for the Baltimore County Police Department, said in an email.

The 800 block of Woodrow Avenue is lined with multistory waterfront homes and modest mobile homes, and it is anchored by Brewers Landing Bar and Grill. Neighbors said they heard six to 10 shots just before 2 a.m.

The shooting drew attention from neighbors to the area around the bar, which has been part of the Essex waterfront community for years. The restaurant was the site of a fatal stabbing following a dispute six years ago, though neighbors said Sunday’s shooting should not be attributed to the business.

“You can’t put the blame on the bar. You have to put blame on people. We live in a society where people don’t know how to communicate,” a neighbor said.

She said her son has played in a band that’s performed at the restaurant and she’s personally patronized the place with her grandchildren. At night, though, it tends to attract a rowdier crowd, she said.

Brewers Landing Bar and Grill sits by the water and is set up in the style of a tiki bar. Its outdoor area is furnished with its own bar; beach chairs; sand; purple, blue, orange, yellow, red and green wooden tables; and a main stage where a five-piece band played tunes, including Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville.”

The incident didn’t stop at least 40 people from visiting the restaurant Sunday, and even more were coming in as the parking lot filled. One neighbor deemed it disrespectful to have a band playing hours after a fatal shooting. The Brewers Landing bar manager said she couldn’t comment and the owner was unavailable for comment.

This comes just weeks after three people were fatally shot in two shootings a mile apart in Essex. Roman Wright, 17, was found shot inside a vehicle on Bladen Road on Aug. 10. Not far away and not long after, Donielle Mack and Izick Aminartey, both 19, were found shot in a car near Banyan Wood Court.

Wright was taken to a hospital, where police said he was pronounced dead. Two teenagers were arrested in his killing.

Aminartey was pronounced dead at the scene while Mack died at a hospital, police said. Baltimore County Police arrested Deandre Neal, 22, of Rosedale in their deaths. He faces two counts of first-degree murder, online court records show.

There have been at least 16 homicides in Baltimore County this year, according to crime data.
