7 people, including a 3-year-old boy, shot in Washington Hill neighborhood

[The latest: Police seek suspect after 7 shot in East Baltimore, including 4-year-old girl]

Seven people were shot, including a 3-year-old boy, in Baltimore’s Washington Hill neighborhood Wednesday night, police and city officials said.

Police Commissioner Richard Worley said all the victims appeared to have non-life-threatening injuries. He added that police were looking for the suspect or suspects and asked for the public’s help in tracking them down.

Baltimore Police officers responded shortly after 9 p.m. to the intersection of East Fayette and North Caroline streets, where they found multiple people shot, Worley said. One of the victims was the child, whom officers immediately drove to the hospital, where she underwent surgery, he said.

The shooting occurred just blocks from the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Medics tended to other victims before transporting them to the hospital, Worley told reporters. A seventh victim walked into a hospital.

“Every single soul in Baltimore should be asking if they know anything about the cowards who shot these seven people,” a visibly upset Mayor Brandon Scott said at the news conference. “... There is no way, to those individuals, there is no way for you to reclaim humanity after doing that.”

Police did not share victims’ relationships to one another, nor did they speak to a possible motive.

Police, Worley said, will “work diligently to find out who did this cowardly act and hopefully hold them accountable.” He said it appears the shots were all fired in the same direction.

The large police response led to the closure of East Fayette and North Caroline streets. Police tape was double wrapped around light poles, trees and a bus stop.

The area, typically well lit and active with two gas stations nearby, grew quiet as more than a dozen police cars blocked off nearly every corner surrounding Douglass Homes, a public housing community.

Audio obtained from the initial dispatch calls indicated the crime scene was large. There were multiple rounds of gunshots and shell casings across North Caroline Street.

This story has been updated to state that the youngest shooting victim was a 3-year-old boy. Baltimore Police initially stated this on Wednesday night, but then said Thursday morning that the victim was a 4-year-old girl before returning to their initial report that a 3-year-old boy was shot.
