A one-story brick warehouse in East Baltimore was condemned after partially collapsing Tuesday afternoon, damaging nearby cars, officials said.
Residents who live near the building, located in the 700 block of East Eager Street, said they heard a crashing sound in the early afternoon and ran outside to see much of the building’s wall gone.
Khalilah Yancey, a spokesperson for the Baltimore City Fire Department, said in an email that firefighters responded to the scene around 1 p.m. and taped off the area. Emergency personnel assessed one person who declined further treatment, Yancey said.
Afterward, three workers with the city of Baltimore removed bricks from the tops of trucks that were smashed in the building collapse.
Under a clear sky and amid a whistling wind, neighbors sat on their porches and watched the cleanup, but none were sure what had happened. One nearby resident said he noticed the wall of the garage had been leaning for a while. Several others told The Banner the same thing.
Tammy Hawley, a spokesperson for the Baltimore City Department of Housing, said the privately owned, commercial-use building had no active permits or violations.
Yancey said motorists can expect traffic around East Eager Street and Homewood Avenue to be affected for several hours.
