A 77-year-old man who was severely injured during an explosion in a shed near Annapolis this week was mixing chemicals, according to the Anne Arundel County Fire Marshal’s Office.
The explosion was reported around 2 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 3000 block of Friends Road, officials said.
“What they know now is that he was doing some sort of mixing of unknown explosive substances,” Cpt. Jennifer MacAllair said. “Currently, we don’t know exactly what all those explosive substances were, but obviously it caused that explosion inside that shed.”
Neighbors went to help the man after hearing the explosion and seeing smoke. Officials said neighbors provided basic medical aid until first responders arrived.
The man was flown to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center for treatment and is listed in serious condition. No other injuries were reported.
The investigation is ongoing.
