Federal immigration agents were involved in a crash Wednesday morning in Annapolis, according to the city’s police department.

According to an email newsletter from Mayor Jared Littmann, the accident came amidst reports of increased immigration enforcement in the city.

Kortlan Jackson, a spokesperson for the Annapolis Police Department, said the accident involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents happened before 8 a.m. near the intersection of Forest Drive and Cherry Grove Avenue.

Nobody was injured, Jackson said.

“The person that they got into an accident with thought that ICE was coming for them. They jumped out of the car, which caused ICE to hit” the car, Jackson said.

Jackson said he did not know the types of vehicles involved in the collision, nor whether an investigation was underway.

Spokespeople for ICE and the federal agency that encompasses it, the Department of Homeland Security, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

There were reports of an “early-morning staging of ICE agents” Tuesday in the parking lot behind the Pip Moyer Recreation Center, Littmann said in the newsletter.

The Democrat added that Annapolis officials, including police, do not participate in immigration enforcement.

“The Mayor’s office, through the City’s Hispanic Community Services Specialist, is working closely with local non-profit organizations to provide resources, listen thoughtfully to the community, and show support when appropriate,” Littmann said. “Our role as City government is to be law-abiding, avoid escalating tensions with federal law enforcement, act compassionately and empathetically, and manage outreach and resources responsibly.”
