A man was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center on Tuesday after an explosion in a detached garage at a home near Annapolis, fire officials said.

Anne Arundel County firefighters were called to the 3000 block of Friends Road just after 2 p.m. for a reported home fire, agency spokesperson Jennifer Macallair said. Upon arrival, they realized they were dealing with an explosion, not a fire, in the detached garage, Macallair said.

Firefighters found a man injured in the garage and transported him to Shock Trauma, where he was in critical condition Tuesday evening.

The 3000 block of Friends Road consists of multistory homes along the South River, just east of Riva Road. The cause of the explosion is under investigation, but Macallair said there’s no indication it was gas-related, nor is there any threat to surrounding homes or the general public.
