The Baltimore City Fire Department said it has contained a hydrochloric acid leak from a rail car in South Baltimore and that it poses “no threat to the surrounding community.”

The department said in a statement that it received a call at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday from CSX about a rail car leak in the 800 block of Chesapeake Avenue and 9th Street.

Hazmat units identified the source of the leak and contained it within the rail yard, fire officials said.

The Maryland Department of the Environment assisted with mitigation efforts, the Fire Department said.

Fire officials said no one was injured and they did not anticipate any traffic impact.

Hydrochloric acid is used in the production of chlorides, fertilizer and dye, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The substance is corrosive to the eyes, skin and mucous membranes, and acute inhalation may cause eye, nose and respiratory tract irritation and inflammation and pulmonary edema in humans.
