A 29-year-old man reported his truck stolen to police minutes after he allegedly broke the window and stole from a Verizon store in Ellicott City last week, police said.

The officers who responded to his vehicle theft report noticed blood on his hands and took him into custody, according to body camera footage from the Howard County Police Department.

Officers responded to the burglary report around 5 a.m. on June 25. There, they noticed a broken window with blood on it, and watched security footage of a man taking items from the store.

About a half hour later, officers who responded to the store were asked to head across the street to a 7-Eleven where a man reported his truck was stolen. When police arrived, one officer noticed blood on the man’s hands and clothing, then quickly arrested him.

The man who officers arrested, Jalen Godard, of Odenton, said multiple times on camera that he wasn’t at the Verizon store. About 10 minutes later, Officer Luke Buchanan with the Howard County Police Department, tells him, “the gigs up,” and Godard agrees to be honest.

It’s not clear what happened after that clip.

The body camera footage released by police skips about a minute later, and Godard says, “They ... stole my truck? Oh my God.”

“That’s kind of some karma shit right there, ain’t it?” Buchanan responded.

Godard was charged with burglary, theft and destruction of property, said Seth Hoffman, a spokesperson for the police department. Maryland court records show he was held without bond.
