A man accused of setting a fire in a vacant rowhouse that led to the deaths of three Baltimore firefighters in 2022 is set to stand trial on Oct. 2 on charges including second-degree murder.
James Barnett appeared on Friday before Baltimore Circuit Judge Melissa M. Phinn, who scheduled his case for 15 days.
Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Galey said prosecutors have sent more than 4,000 digital files to Barnett’s attorney, Assistant Public Defender Jason Rodriguez, and were still working to provide additional evidence.
Galey said he expects to call more than seven expert witnesses and that no plea offer had been made.
Barnett, 57, of West Baltimore, is charged with three counts of second-degree murder. He also faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment and arson.
On Jan. 24, 2022, Lt. Kelsey Sadler, Lt. Paul Butrim and EMT/firefighter Kenny Lacayo died after the home on South Stricker Street near West Pratt Street in Mount Clare partially collapsed. EMT/firefighter John McMaster was seriously hurt.
Baltimore Police reported that investigators used imaging technology to analyze surveillance video.
Detectives allege Barnett spent eight minutes inside the home, and that the footage shows flashes of light consistent with a butane cigarette lighter. He told investigators he used to live in the house but denied setting the fire.
Earlier this year, U.S. District Judge Matthew J. Maddox for a second time threw out a lawsuit that the families of the firefighters filed against the city. They’ve asked for permission to refile the case.
Barnett is set to appear back in court on Sept. 30 for a motion hearing. He’s being held in the Metropolitan Transition Center without bail.
