A 68-year-old Glen Burnie man is facing dozens of charges after Prince George’s County Police say he carried out a series of shootings and carjackings across the northern part of the county Friday afternoon.

The suspect, identified as Larry James Simpson, is charged with 66 offenses, including 16 counts each of attempted first- and second-degree murder, according to the Prince George’s County Police Department. Additional charges may be pending.

Investigators say the crime spree began around 2:30 p.m. in the 5100 block of Pierce Avenue in College Park, where witnesses reported a man pointing a long gun from a vehicle and firing several shots. No injuries were reported.

Police say Simpson later shot at a vehicle on Riverdale Road near the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, injuring a 64-year-old man with shattered glass when a bullet struck the car window. The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Minutes later, Simpson allegedly crashed his vehicle at 67th Avenue and Patterson Street in Riverdale, causing it to overturn. Police say he then carjacked a Nissan and opened fire on multiple victims. One man was critically injured but is expected to survive.

Authorities say Simpson later carjacked a woman’s Toyota near Kenilworth Avenue and Good Luck Road after shooting in her direction. She was not injured.

The final incident happened in the 9000 block of Edmonston Road in Greenbelt, where police say Simpson attempted to carjack a Honda and fired toward an off-duty Prince George’s County Police officer who had been tracking him in a personal vehicle. The officer was not struck.

The off-duty officer, who was unarmed, witnessed one of the carjackings and followed the suspect while his wife — also a Prince George’s County Police officer — relayed Simpson’s location in real time to responding officers and partner agencies, police said.

With help from the U.S, Park Police, Simpson was taken into custody. Investigators recovered an AR-15-style rifle.

Simpson was treated at a hospital for injuries believed to have been sustained in the Riverdale crash before being released into the custody of the Department of Corrections.
