The 17-year-old suspected of shooting a 13-year-old in the leg at the Westfield Wheaton Mall on Friday was held without bond Monday in court.

The suspect will be tried as an adult, according to Montgomery County Police. He is charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, use of a firearm in the commission of a violent felony, carrying a loaded handgun on his person and possession of a firearm by a minor.

The Banner does not name suspects who are younger than 18.

Prosecutors said in court that the gun allegedly used in the shooting jammed, suggesting that the shooter may have intended to fire more shots, according to WUSA 9.

A judge granted defense attorneys’ request that the suspect be held in a juvenile detention facility despite the adult charges, the news outlet reported.

Officers responded to the shooting about 6 p.m. on Friday, police said in a statement.

A video shared online and verified by police shows a group of teenagers walking by the suspect, who fires after they pass and then runs away.

An armed security guard at Dick’s Sporting Goods stopped the suspect, took him to the ground and detained him until police arrived.

The victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
