The Maryland Office of the Attorney General is seeking video of a fatal police shooting Sunday in Gaithersburg in which officers from Montgomery County and Gaithersburg police fired at a man who was allegedly loading a gun at a bus stop.
Any release of preliminary information about the incident is delayed because investigators need βadditional time to review information,β according to a statement from the office.
As required by state law, because it involves a fatal police shooting, the officeβs Independent Investigations Division is handling the case.
The shooting occurred at about 6:50 p.m. near Montgomery Village Plaza.
On the scene, officers located the man, whose identity has not been released. They attempted to deescalate the situation, authorities said, and worked to clear the plazaβs crowded parking lot.
βWhile interacting with the subject, the adult male took actions which caused the officers to discharge their service weapons,β police said. No officers or bystanders were injured.
Montgomery Police said several officers with their department and Gaithersburg Police discharged their service weapons.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, where a handgun was recovered, police said.
It is the second on-duty police shooting near Montgomery Village Plaza this year. In March, Montgomery County Police wounded a Germantown man after officers said he fired multiple shots at an officer during a chase.
Anyone with information about the latest police shooting, including cellphone or private video, is asked to contact the IID at 410-576-7070 or by email at IID@oag.maryland.gov.
