A 36-year-old man from Dundalk pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to spray-painting swastikas on a dozen headstones at a historic Jewish cemetery in Baltimore County, according to court documents.

The man, George Horn, pleaded guilty to damaging religious property after he used black paint to deface several headstones at Ohr Knesseth Israel Anshe Sfard Cemetery in Dundalk in July 2023, court documents show. Horn admitted that he targeted the headstones knowing they were in a Jewish cemetery, according to a news release from the District of Maryland’s U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Investigators found evidence of the vandalism on Horn’s phone, including texts of him telling another person that he was going to the cemetery, messages that contained slurs for Jewish people and a downloaded translated copy of “Mein Kampf,” Adolf Hitler’s political manifesto. Court documents also described a nine-second video found on Horn’s phone that shows his hand, which has a distinctive tattoo on it, spray painting the headstones.

Some of the headstones needed to be thoroughly cleaned and two needed to be completely replaced, costing the Jewish Cemetery Association of Greater Baltimore over $6,500, according to the plea agreement. The Jewish cemetery dates back to the 19th century. Horn agreed to pay for the damages as part of his guilty plea.

Horn faces up to three years in prison. He will be sentenced in January by U.S. District Judge Matthew J. Maddox.
