A Montgomery County police officer shot and wounded a man Tuesday after he fired at officers in Montgomery Village, police said.
The 27-year-old, whose name was not released, fired two shots at officers, police said in a statement. The man was hospitalized in stable condition and is expected to survive.
The incident occurred about 4:51 p.m. as officers were patrolling Contour Road in Montgomery Village Plaza because of “community complaints of criminal activity,” police said.
Prior to the shooting, officers saw a man acting suspiciously, they said. He ran toward an apartment complex when they approached.
Officers gave chase. As they rounded the corner of an apartment building, the suspect fired and police returned fire.
The officer who shot him was not identified and will be placed on administrative leave, police said, along with another officer directly involved in the incident who did not fire his weapon.
“We want to make sure that they have all the resources that this department can give them so we can ensure their mental health, safety and get them back to work when they’re ready,” Assistant Chief Darren Francke, who oversees the Patrol Services Bureau, said of the two officers at a media briefing.
Montgomery County Police Chief Marc Yamada praised the officers during the press conference.
“We are extremely thankful that these brave officers were not injured at all while doing their duty to ensure the safety of our community.”
A handgun was recovered from the scene.
