It’s that time of year in Maryland: you’re shivering in the morning and sweating by lunch.

As the state moves deeper into fall, the weather has swung from record highs to 40-degree lows.

Temperatures climbed to 88 degrees in the Baltimore area Wednesday, a record high for Oct. 14, according to National Weather Service records. The high temperature Thursday is expected to drop to around 65 degrees, according to NWS, before climbing back to the 80s on Friday.

Things will dip again this weekend, with highs on Saturday and Sunday forecast to be in the high 50s and overnight lows in the low 40s.

Some showers are also expected Friday night, with a chance of a few carrying over to the day on Saturday. The Baltimore Running Festival is taking place on Saturday morning.

Marylanders are also still waiting to see peak fall foliage in most areas of the state, although red and orange leaves have begun to pop up in Western Maryland. The Baltimore metro area and capital region’s leaves are “just changing,” according to an Oct. 8 update from the state’s Department of Natural Resources.

Next week’s weather is projected to settle into a more predictable rhythm, with highs in the mid-60s and lows near 50. But for now, Mother Nature is keeping Marylanders on their toes.
