Fans headed to the ballpark Friday for the Nationals’ home opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers will be feeling the heat as temperatures approach a record high.

The Nats’ three-game home stand against the World Series champions is sure to generate excitement. Revelers in the stands should take appropriate precautions during the games on Friday and Saturday, AccuWeather meteorologist Tyler Roys said.

“It’s very much going to feel like early summer,” Roys said. “Make sure you put on sunscreen if you’re heading to the park.”

Friday’s high is expected to reach 84 degrees, shy of the record of 87 set on April 3, 1963.

Saturday’s expected high of 87 is projected to set a record, breaking the high of 85 in 2011, Roys said.

Roys added that both days are expected to be muggy and breezy. Winds from the south are expected from 10-20 mph, with 30 mph gusts on Friday, making it more likely balls are hit toward left field, Roys said.

Similar wind conditions are expected Saturday, except the winds will generate from the south-southwest, making it more likely batters who make contact carry the ball toward center field, Roys said.

Although conditions look mostly ideal Friday and Saturday, conditions for Sunday’s game with the back-to-back champions are looking more dicey.

Temperatures are expected to drop on Sunday, with a high of 69 and a low of 44, according to the AccuWeather forecast. Rain and potential thunderstorms are expected throughout the day, Roys said.

“The game will be played in some rain,” he said. “Some of those showers might be thunderstorms.”

Thunderstorms could bring lightning, which could lead to delays, Roys said.
