Kimi Yoshino
Founding Editor in Chief
Kimi Yoshino is the founding Editor in Chief of The Baltimore Banner. Since the nonprofit digital site launched in June 2022, she has developed the editorial strategy and grown the award-winning newsroom to more than 80 journalists.
Prior to relocating to The Banner, she was Managing Editor at the Los Angeles Times, where she worked for 21 years. At The Times, she held numerous roles — as a reporter, editor, and strategic leader. In 2011, she helped guide the paper’s investigation into corruption in the city of Bell, which was awarded the Pulitzer Gold Medal for Public Service.
Kimi is a California native and started her career as a reporter at The Stockton Record and The Fresno Bee.
It’s Sunshine Week, a time to emphasize the need for open records and government transparency, and we thought we’d highlight some local winners and losers.
Since moving to Baltimore I’ve been exploring the region and slowly replenishing my pantry bottles and jars of Chinese vinegars, Thai curry pastes and other ingredients I had to throw out when I left Los Angeles.
We worked with each of our journalists to think deeply about how their work affects people, and to craft individual mission statements that describe the specific impacts their work aims to have.
