“He’s the best,” owner Al Gold said of his trainer. “He wanted this. This is his dream. He loves the game, and I’m really happy for him. It’s awesome.”
In a 14-horse field that’s without the top two Derby finishers and a Bob Baffert trainee who was expected to be a top contender, Iron Honor is now seen as the favorite.
“It’s a little close for him. He’s been running hard, he’s been running fast, and he’s such a brilliant racehorse that I just think it’d be doing too much too soon with him,” Baffert said.
Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo will not make the trip to Laurel Park, trainer Cherie DeVaux announced Wednesday, and will instead point to the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in June.
Journalism capably handled the two-week turnaround after the Kentucky Derby and continued the winning ways he’s shown throughout his 3-year-old campaign.
Derby winner Sovereignty, who outdueled Journalism to win the Run for the Roses by 1 1/2 lengths, is not making the trip to Baltimore for the final Preakness at historic Pimlico.
